Skin Cancer Prevention Study

We are recruiting participants for a new skin cancer prevention research study.

Who is conducting the study? The National Cancer Institute sponsors this study, conducted by the Arizona Cancer Center at the University of Arizona.

What is the purpose of the Study?  The study is designed to determine whether a topical cream called Perillyl alcohol (or “POH”) has an effect on specific properties within skin cells that are associated with sun damage.  Additionally, it will be determined if POH is safely tolerated when applied to the skin.

What is the treatment?  Study participants are randomized into one of three different groups applying a cream (POH in one of two strengths or a non-medicated cream) to the forearms twice daily for three months.   Participants also avoid sun exposure and keep a diary of applications and sun exposure.

How long is the study? The duration of the study is approximately 5 months.

Who is eligible for the study?  Healthy men and women, age 18 and older, with sun-damaged skin including at least two Actinic Keratoses on each forearm.  Actinic Keratoses are small, rough, scaly spots that do not go away; physicians often treat these areas with liquid nitrogen (freezing).  Female participants must be post-menopausal or surgically sterile by hysterectomy.  Other qualifications are reviewed at an initial phone interview.

What is required during the study? Study participants have blood and urine samples drawn at the beginning and at the end of the study, and EKG tests are done. Small skin samples (punch biopsies) are collected from the arms at the beginning and at the end of the study.  Study participants come to the clinic approximately once a month and are asked to provide information on medical history, demographic information and diet.

Qualified volunteers receive compensation for their participation in the study. For more information, please call 520-321-7745
